“Why do you kiss me at night, Mumma?” asked my 5 year old.

“Coz you don’t fight me at bed time.” I wanted to say. At 5, she wriggles out of my hugs and embraces. She has a mind of her own. She is a person now and not my cuddly, little baby!

Instead I said, “I kiss you at bedtime because I want you to go to bed knowing that I love you. I want to sleep knowing that you are loved and cherished. I want you to feel safe and secure when you sleep and know that I’m going to be around for you. I want you to know that I will always love you, even if you make mistakes and even when I correct you.” She made some noises and snuggled up, though she took her sweet time to fall asleep.

Little does she know that I steal some light for myself from her bright little heart and some strength for myself from her slight little frame. Little does she know that she keeps me alive, in more ways than one.
